Table of Contents:
Backing with Bryan Neubert
Being able to back your horse up might seem like an elementary movement, but backing a horse of any age can present challenges. Bryan Neubert offers some suggestions on how to prepare and back a horse with little experience under saddle and also a horse with more experience. He discusses different approaches for both stages of horse that can help you and your horse be successful.
Tarp Exposure with Kristi Fredrickson
Trail riding can be challenging and stretch your comfort zone; being prepared before you head out is key to having an enjoyable ride. In the next few Gazettes Kristi Fredrickson will be presenting some exercises to help riders prepare in the arena for the challenges of riding out on the trail. In this segment Kristi uses a tarp to simulate a troubling thing or situation you might encounter on the trail, to give her students the opportunity to simulate a crisis and be prepared to get past the troubling situation.
Warm Up Exercise with Martin Black
Whether its a frosty spring or fall morning, your horse has had some time off, or you are going to get on a horse you aren’t familiar with, you might want to check him out to make sure he’s going to be OK before you get on. Martin Black demonstrates how you can make sure your horse can disengage with forward motion on the ground, and in the saddle. He also discusses how to help the horse get in to a learning frame of mind.
Softness in Horses Tom Curtin
What is softness in a horse? Is it just flexion in the poll or is there more to it than that. Tom Curtin discusses his ideas about softness and how he goes about asking a horse to round and get soft from both ends. In addition to the use of the reins and hands Tom discusses how he uses his legs, seat and feet to encourage softness. Tom offers insight on how to tell if your horse is truly soft and talks about how being soft feels to the horse.
