In this Issue:
• Activating The Hind Legs Using Transitions with Jim Hicks 41:50
We all know that an educated horse moves from back to front but actually helping a horse develop that feel can be elusive. In this lesson Jim Hicks takes us through the use of transitions to develop engagement and collection and how to be mindful in each and every ride. Watch his horse’s hind legs become more active through transitions between gaits and between movements.
• Preparation for Opening a Gate with Lee Smith 14:30
Making sure you have a solid foundation will set you and your horse up for success no matter the task at hand. The foundation for opening a gate is to have your horse able to move his hind quarters, front quarters and to be able move laterally. In this lesson Lee Smith demonstrates how to make sure your horse is hooked onto your weight aids to improve the clarity of movement and how to refine that feel if necessary.
• Working with a Flag Horseback with Tom Curtin 16:35
Developing a solid partnership with your horse can come through time spent riding but is enhanced by setting up situations where both of you are challenged. In this lesson Tom Curtin guides us through working a colt with a flag while riding his saddle horse. He shows us what he’s looking for from each horse mentally and physically and discusses the benefits of having a job for your horse to do.
• Colt Foundations with Alicia Byberg 43:57
On a rainy morning at Wildwood Farm in Tennessee Alicia Byberg works with an off-the-track Thoroughbred on some groundwork basics and work with a rope that will ensure his transition from racing to riding horse. Alicia thoughtfully narrates this session by describing not only what she would like to see improved in the colt but what she likes in him as she works and the motivations behind what she is doing what she does.
