Product Description
Siobhán Watkins, Ph.D. will be authoring a series of articles and teaching monthly classes in the coming year that aim to gather up and translate some of the recent advances in our understanding of equine science, and explore how we might apply this information to our own equestrian practices.
This class will provide an overview of the equine endocrine system, exploring its vital role in horse health. We’ll delve into key concepts within equine science, including:
• Understanding how the endocrine system regulates various bodily functions in horses.
• Examining a selection of significant studies conducted within the last five years to gain insights into the latest advancements in equine endocrinology.
• Discussing the crucial link between nutrition and endocrine health, particularly focusing on conditions like PPID (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction), Cushing’s Disease, Insulin Resistance, and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS).
We will learn how thoughtful management can help to minimize the risk of developing these conditions and understanding the nutritional recommendations from veterinarians for horses diagnosed with endocrine disorders.
Why this class matters:
Proactive nutritional management is key to supporting your horse’s endocrine health and preventing the onset of conditions like PPID and EMS. This class will equip you with the knowledge to make informed decisions about your horse’s diet and overall well-being.
The class was held Thursday February 13 via Zoom starting at 6pm MST.
Please plan on the class lasting at least an hour. We will start with a lecture with slides and then open up for questions and answers from the students.
