Eclectic Conversations – The Training Spiral by Sue Grice

Emily introduced Sue Grice and her book “The Training Spiral,” which emphasizes the importance of effective communication, clarity, and structure in equestrian training. Sue shares her background in horse riding and her approach to coaching, which focuses on individualized, progressive learning and allows horses and riders to progress at their own pace. The discussion also touched on the challenges riders face in advancing through the levels of training and the concept of a spiral framework for training, which was found to be adaptable to various riding disciplines.

“Although everybody knows about the training pyramid or the scales of training nobody seems to actually use it in their day-to-day training. They use a lot of the elements of it, so they might talk about rhythm or collection, or straightness and things like this. But there doesn’t seem to be this actual structure about how to use it in the day-to-day training…And just gradually over time with my own coaching, I started to sort of use it more and more, as like a priority list. And then I started to just see more and more, that actually, every single element from the training spiral applies at every single level.”
