Excerpt from the Horseman’s Gazette Issue No. 10
Despite its name, halter breaking doesn’t have to be an unpleasant process. Several months after the horse’s first experience, Peter Campbell resumes his work with a young filly. He continues to build positive responses and gently teaches her how to yield to pressure in different ways. Here he begins to work with her feet, asking her to yield each foot and to find her balance. Try not to turn this task into a contest. Keep simple expectations at first and progress as your horse becomes ready. Peter also introduces her to a flag in preparation for saddling. As your horse learns how to respond appropriately to each situation, their confidence and trust in you will grow.
