The toes grow faster than the heels, whether the hoof is shod or not. Contrast the shoeing-in-progress hoof’s shorter toe and consistent pastern-hoof angle with the shoe-just-pulled hoof’s longer toe. Overlook the toe flare (the excess has been removed in the nearly finished hoof) and note the
difference between the hoof angles. Breakover is more
difficult when the toe is long.
