In this issue of The Horseman’s Gazette, we present an incredible masterclass in foundational horsemanship. With decades of colt-starting experience between them, David Hillman and Gene Armstrong come together to share their ideas, methods, and insights while working with these young horses. Watch as Dave spends time with a colt named Frodo, breaking down the essential, subtle details of catching and turning loose—lessons that lay the groundwork for a lifetime of partnership. We are deeply saddened to share that Gene Armstrong passed away this year. The time we documented between these two remarkable horsemen is now even more precious and meaningful. These are lessons to be treasured. Let’s get started.
• Understanding Contact with Katrin Silva (46:02)
Contact is never heavy, or static, or pulling, but for some it can be a bad word. In this lesson Katrin Silva explores contract from a very green horse, through a more educated horse and on up to a very experienced one. She discusses the evolution of how she asks for and maintains contact at each stage of development and examines the conformational and other challenges each horse might face. Without ego she invites us along to watch and learn from her training horses as they are learning themselves.
• Ponying another horse with Alice Trindle (49:34)
Ponying: It’s a versatile skill—whether you’re conditioning a performance horse, leading a colt to new places, or simply enjoying the company of a second mount. In this segment, Alice Trindle explores the art and practicality of taking a horse along while you ride. Alice examines the specific goals for the rider, the saddle horse, and the pony prospect, highlighting both the rewards and the common pitfalls you might encounter. She then guides you through the process step-by-step, with a laser focus on safety. You’ll learn essential, secure ways of handling your reins and lead rope to ensure the experience is positive and controlled for everyone involved.
