Welcome to the 52nd issue of The Horseman’s Gazette, a quarterly video-series that enables you to watch and learn from some of the most talented horsewomen and -men working with horses today.

The trainers and teachers featured in our video lessons are focused on horsemanship as a process not just as performance. In this video series they are opening up their arenas to you to watch and learn from their training process so you can learn from the changes that you witness while they work. You will find solid educational segments that give you ideas of tangible exercises to try with your horse as well as give you a vision visually for where you might like to take your horsemanship.

• Preparing for Trail Obstacles – The Bridge with Amy LeSatz 9:20
Whether you are trail riding for pleasure or competition knowing that you are prepared for obstacles you may encounter will give you and your horse confidence. In this segment Amy LeSatz instructs you how to introduce the bride on the ground and under saddle in a calm and controlled manner so you and your horse will be ready to cross that bridge… when you come to it. 

• Groundwork Basics with Martin Black 16:01
Groundwork can often feel like some elaborate dance that might not be connected to what you will do under saddle. In this segment Martin Black demonstrates groundwork at it’s most basic level; the questions he would want to ask his horse before stepping up into the saddle.

• Ideas for Improving the Stop with Ty Evans 23:30
Tom Dorrance used to say that a mule is like a horse only more so. In that spirit we are thrilled to have our first segments featuring mules with instruction from Ty Evans. In this segment Ty demonstrates how to develop a stop on a young mule who is very forward and not thinking about stopping when he starts his ride. He shows several strategies and helps you understand the thought process behind building an incentive to stop; not just the mechanics of how to stop.

• Colt Starting Project Part 1 with David Hillman and Gene Armstrong 1:32:36
Helping a young horse to have a good start can prepare them for the rest of their life. However, sometimes when a horse has a not so great start there are challenges that must be overcome before they can move forward. In this segment David Hillman and Gene Armstrong collaborate in a truly inspiring way to help a young horse who arrived to be started with some history. Enjoy this opportunity to experience what a joy it is to work with someone else to help find what’s best for the horse.

• Moving Into the Flag with Bryan Neubert 15:41
Using a flag to get a horse used to the movement and feel of something moving is a pretty familiar concept, but in this segment Bryan Neubert uses the flag in a little different way then you may have seen before. Helping a horse learn how to com forward into that sound and movement of the flag can help build confidence that will translate to encountering obstacles under saddle.
