Hi from Spain. I would like to comment on the educational article written by Jan Young, Observe, Remember and Compare, The Inductive Study Method in the Eclectic Horseman magazine number 124. The amount of questions we have to ask the horse on every meeting and the amount of questions we must ask ourselves every time we are in their presence and with what attitude we ask these just shows us once again the small details that go into being a better horseman. Rare to find a magazine dedicated to this style of horsemanship in our region. Although at first glance I was a little bit disappointed by the relatively small number of pages, I soon found out that the magazine is packed with real and profound articles and very little “page fillers” or adds. I have never seen such an excellent magazine. All done without advertising. Articles from Deb Bennett’s almost university courses, to Martin Black’s brilliant, how to’s in few words. And this last issue Nov/Dec #116 tops them all. A new writer, Nahshon Cook, seemingly another Tom Dorrance, Alice Trindle, always a pleasure to read or watch has a detailed lesson plan for this and coming articles. The format and paper and colour makes easy pleasurable reading. This is bar none the best magazine on the market for variety and information.

This is the only horse magazine I subscribe to. Eclectic Horseman always delivers on consistent quality, instructional articles about horsemanship that can be applied to any discipline. Not to mention the contributors are the best in the business. Whether it’s Martin Black, Brian Nuebert, Dr. Deb Bennett or so many others, I look forward to my issue every time! Another bonus are the articles that focus on craftsmanship. It really gives the reader an appreciation for quality work in tack and other items. Lastly, I just love the way it looks. The illustrations are beautiful, and the layout is a little retro….which I love!

eh has gone from just a magazine casually mentioned by my former natural trimmer to the one i look forward to most. just the fact that it is almost all content, rather than advertising, is worth a lot. i don’t live in the west, ride a wade saddle, or wear chinks (although i’d sure like some), but there is always information i love and use – so much so that when i eventually pass on old issues, they have pages missing, or at least lots of dogears and underlining. please don’t change! (ps – i also like that you’re ‘NOT glossy’ – me neither!)

I enjoy the simplistic design layout of the magazine and as stated in previous reviews the invasion of advertisements are kept to a minimum. Eclectic Horseman has the best authors, professional horse people who deliver detailed and beneficial information to improve one’s horsemanship. It amazes me how often I go back and get a copy to reread an article and pick up the nuances as to what the author is conveying. Absolute must for any horse person.I only wish it was published more often.

Eclectic Horseman is not just a magazine, it is a equine community which connects you to what you are looking for. I discovered EH a few years ago. Love the publication. Found a clinic over 1000 miles away that I just had to attend with an iconic horseman. My wife and I trailered to the clinic and learned so much, that we just did it again this year. Mind you, we’ve been a student of the horse for 30 years each.
After this last clinic, I asked this horseman if he would consider taking my mare for the winter and expose her to his training. After making sure he could fit it in to his schedule, the deal was made. She will be exposed to day work, ranch roping, and the work it takes to do the job.
If it had not been for EH, I would have never known about the clinic, never personally met this icon, and my horse would not be in the incredible position she is in. An absolute honor to have this true cowboy ride my mare.

I am so glad that there is a magazine designed to share horsemanship (dressage, buckaroo, vaquero whatever you would like to call it) and focuses/designed for learning, not filled with ads or questionable care and tactics. Overall, each article is truly a small version of a book with varying topics to fit anyone’s level of horsemanship.
This issue imparticular was great to read! I love the last part of Donnette Hick’s article on dear Milly. I also enjoyed that there were some random-but related articles thrown in the mix such as “Saddle Fallacies” Gives someone a chance to not get overwhelmed with all the great information, but still as something fun to read. I also enjoyed “Getting with the Feet”, a concept that I am til working on. Luckily, the magazine is great at explaining these sometimes abstract ideas so I feel that I am in good hands.
This is a magazine subscription that I see myself having for a very long time.

I was lucky enough to see Buck Brannaman’s clinic in Lexington, VA a couple weeks ago, and all the exercises the participants were doing had been featured in the most recent issue of Eclectic, step by step. My friend and I went home and got out the magazine and practiced the exercises, and our horses became much more light and responsive. It’s the only horse magazine I read. This issue, and all the issues I’ve read, provide levels of information helpful to where you’re at in your horsemanship. When I first began these methods of training, I learned at that level, but now the words mean something at a completely new level. For example, Getting With the Feet Part 1- the Hangerman analogy, brings a very basic concept to light whereas in the past I might have skipped over some of those images, focusing on what was basic to me at that time.
The articles are refreshing compared to other horse magazines and I love the info from professionals in various disciplines. I could recommend anyone who wants their horse to be a happy partner read this issue and subscribe to the series.

It is a great quality magazine, with beautiful photos and high quality paper which really adds to the reading experience. I look forward to the magazine and often end up re-reading issues because the articles are so in depth and I get a lot from them at different stages of working with horses. I would definitely recommend it to other horse people!

Eclectic Horseman has my and my horse’s best interests at heart. I trust the content. The philosophy is in line with how I like to work with my horse – fairly and respectfully. With each issue, I feel part of a community of horse folks who are also learning for life. I reference the articles frequently and enjoy the Facebook page, where articles are re-posted. I always go back in and re-read as many as I can. Each time there is a thing or two that makes a little more sense as my knowledge grows.

Every magazine has something you can work on with detailed descriptions and photos from so many amazing Horsemen and Horsewomen. You may not get to clinics or if you need re-enforcing on what you learned this magazine will help you.
When I’m working my horses I will often have an article nearby to refer to, an example: Pefecting lateral flexion (issue no.86) very clearly illustrates and explains the proper elements of lateral flexion and helped my horse and I get off to a good start. Keep up the great work and format of this magazine!

Speaking of covers it is so nice to see people on the covers that I have met or who are well known by reputation to me. The contributer’s are varied covering a wide selection of topics all to do with producing sound confident horses. Deb Bennett with her university courses in a nutshell, Wendy Murdoch with her riding lessons, Martin Black of few words but each word counts. The many coloured pictures in the articles are informative and a pleasure to view. I have given this magazine as gifts and will give more subscriptions as gifts. I consider it a gift to my friends, but more than that it is a gift to the horses.

I received a gift subscription for Christmas. In the two issues I’ve learned some interesting things about varied topics. The “Feeling What a Horse Needs” photo series is fantastic. I love that it’s not cluttered with ads on every page and that the articles are clear and relevant and not filler and fluff. What a refreshing treat! I wish the magazine was twice as long and came twice as often!

A great source of education in the vaquero riding tradition. As a newcomer to the style Eclectic Horseman has been informative and inspiring. It comes recommended by an instructor I’ve worked with who is also a student of Buck Brannaman, so I knew I’d be getting quality content. I just wish each issue were longer!
